Hamilton Township

People often refer to Hamilton Township as Mays Landing, which is actually one neighborhood in this sprawling municipality.

The region was first inhabited by the Absegami tribe of the Unalachtiga branch of the Lenni Lenape nation. The first Europeans showed up in 1695. Less than 50 years later, Captain George May worked his way up the Great Egg Harbor River (named by another explorer, Henry Hudson). May started a small settlement along a bend in the river, at the site now known as Mays Landing.

Part suburban, part rural and part booming, this town of about 18,000 people has seen dramatic growth since the casino industry came to Atlantic City, 15 miles to the east. Yet in spite of the changes it has seen, Mays Landing maintains its distinction as a peaceful and inviting small town.

The township offers excellent public schools. Both the Atlantic County Vocational School and the main campus of the Atlantic County Special Services School District are located within Hamilton Business Park. Mays Landing is also home to the main campus of Atlantic Cape Community College.
